Review of Redshirts by John Scalzi

I really enjoyed the first 2/3 of this book.

It appealed to my warped sense of humor and the twisted homage to the Star Trek series made me laugh out loud. And occasionally giggle uncontrollably.

If you are the type of person who thinks Bored of the Rings is JUST NOT FUNNY, you will probably want to pass on this one as well. If you are the type of person who thinks Bored of the Rings is one of the best parodies ever, you will probably enjoy the first 2/3 of this book.

Let me explain.

The first 2/3 of the book (2/3, ¾, whatever, math was never my best subject.) is basically a stand-alone story. I don’t want to give away any plot twists, so bear with me. After those 24 chapters, there are three codas, each a separate section and their own short story. The codas tie into the story, and I assume are meant to add to the story, but are not necessary to the story.

I wish I had stopped after the main story. The codas just didn’t work for me. They twisted the story in different directions, and changed the tone entirely. If I reread this book I’m going to pretend the codas are not there.

Overall, an enjoyable read.

I give it 3 stars.

2013 Hugo Awards!!

I am excited that Redshirts won and is awaiting me at the library.

And that Game of Thrones won a HUGO for HBO.

But Avengers? Really? I loved it, but a Hugo?
