Review of Dog in the Manger: An Eli Paxton Mystery by Mike Resnick

Mike Resnick is well-known for his fantasy and science fiction writing, which includes a number of books which are mysteries as well. Stalking the Unicorn, for example.

Fans of those SF&F mysteries might be surprised. This book is a straight up mystery novel. No dragons or unicorns or alternate worlds in sight.

It is, however, a very fine example of the private eye mystery genre. Eli Paxton is a believable, likeable guy who makes a living finding lost things and documenting divorce case arguments. Until one day looking for a lost dog turns into someone shooting at him. Then things get dangerous and interesting. It would be nice if they also turned profitable, but Eli’s not counting on it.

If you are a Mike Resnick fan, but don’t usually read mysteries, give this a try. I think you’ll like it.

If you’ve never heard of Mike Resnick but enjoy a good PI story, I know you’ll like it.

If you are like me, and are both a fan and like a good PI story, sit back and enjoy. And then go pick up the next Eli Paxton mystery The Trojan Colt as well.

I give it 4 stars.
